TAGANT

TIDJIKJA: 375 km from Atar and 250 km from Tichitt.

Idawalis who came from Chenguetti, founded one of the largest palm plantations of Mauritania, Tidjikja, around 1860. Thanks to its palm plantations, Tidjikja quickly developed, becoming a caravan city. At the beginning of the 20th century, Tidjikja is already a prosperous village. It attracted Capolani, who made it a fortified town. And it is there that he was assassinated in 1905.

Tidjikja extends besides a Wadi, which bears the same name. Tidjikja owes its prosperity to the entrepreneurial spririt of its inhabitants who knew how to create prosperous palm plantations and gardens. Tidjikja is also a cattle-breeding area and a commercial warehouse; it is riding over a wadi of which it bears the same name. A stop over city towards Tichitt, it requires a guide and a good 4x4 vehicle.

Places to visit:
the palm plantation, the tomb of Capolani, the old city, the Library.

There are two Rachid; the old one and the new city. The old city is in ruin. One can however see the vestiges of the latter, built of stones on the cliff. The new city is of modern construction, which extends from the edge of a Oued towards the south.
Places to visit:
the old city, the Mosque, gardens and the palm plantation.

LODGING Rachid now has its own inn, the L’AUBERGE DE L’ASSOCIATION (INN OF THE ASSOCIATION > Ksar El Barka
It is an old city which goes back nearly four centuries. The old city has disappeared. But the remnants are always visible.
Places to visit: the old city and the Mosque.

MOUDJERIA: is 140 km from of Tidjikja. The town of Moudjeria is located on a marvellous site between the Massif and the dune ridges. Between Tidjikja and Moudjeria, it is necessary to go down by the Achetf towards the south. There too, the site is splendid.
Moudjeria is essentially a declining administrative city. But the new asphalted road gives it a new life. Tourism has a real opportunity to develop.
Around Moudjeria there are two interesting sites: the GRENIER GANGERA (loosely translated the Gangara attic), some sorts of remnants of cereal silos dating back some 2000 years or more and the GUELTA DE MALAMA where crocodiles would be present. This Guelta receives the rainwaters coming from the high lands of Tagant. The zone has very good agricultural potential in the Tamourt In-Aj basin.

Nbeika

It is a city, which is developing quickly thanks to the transport industry and commerce. An interesting site is the Labyadh Wadi, a basin filled by the rainwater’s.

LODGING

There are some quite comfortable tent-inns. You can make of Nbeika a starting point to visit Kasr El Barka, Rachid and Matmata.
