Historically, the town of Rosso was a stopover for the trade with the left bank of the river. This trade revolved around the trade of Arabic gum. It experienced an accelerated development at that time; this city became the most important commercial centre of the country after the independence in 1960. Rosso is a junction between the border and Nouakchott and the remainder of the zone of the River and Nouakchott especially with the Rosso-Boghé road.
Rosso is a tourist destination and constitutes the main access from and to Senegal.
You can pass the border by ferry or motorized pirogue (dugout).

SCHEDULES OF THE FERRY
There are four to six round trips per day from 9:00 am hours to noon and 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The ferry easily takes vehicles of all kinds: heavy trucks, cars, 4x4, limousines. You can remain at the wheel of your car.

MEDERDRA is 65 km from Rosso, 47 km from Tiguint and 155 km from Nouakchott.
Historically it was the capital of the Emirate of Trarza. Mederdra is searching for a new orientation. Mederdra has experienced a long decline since the end of the fifties with the reduction of the collection of Arabic gum and the decrepitude of the exploitation of the saltworks of Nterert. Its administrative role also declined after the development of Nouakchott, Rkiz, Keur Macène and Ouad Naga.
The local arts and crafts attract some tourists. The sand dunes are worth seeing and especially the famous craft industry with is made from ebony, silver and gold.
The district of Tiguint is on the Nouakchott-Rosso road. From Tiguint, one can visit the Ocean at approximately 10 km. The village of Nimjatt , is at 30 km of Tiguint and on a good trail, is a place of pilgrimage of the sanctuary of Sheik Saad Bouh, attended by hundreds at the end of each Ramadan, even thousands of pilgrims coming from Senegal.
KEUR MACÈNE is 84 km from Rosso, and 205 km from Nouakchott.
In Keur Macène, there are two installations to see: the National park of Diawling and the Hunting Camp.
The National park of Diawling
The park was well refitted thanks to multiple dams and small flood banks. It covers 16.000 hectares (1 hectare is 2.47 acres). Nature regenerated; shrubs, flora and especially thousands of birds, pelicans and herons. This environment attracts warthogs and jackals. The Hunting Camp
Hunting expeditions are organized in a protected reserve. On the ocean, one can practice surfing. The camp has well equipped rooms and a good restaurant.

A city in full expansion based on the agricultural development motivated by the installation of projects on the lake of the same name. Rkiz is a large commercial centre.
