From NOUADHIBOU to ZOUERATE, it is 500 km.

It is possible to travel from Nouadhibou to Zouerate and vice versa by the ore transport train of the SNIM. Every day, there are two trains with coaches, one in each direction. The voyage can be done by wagon-berth, or 1stclass with a panoramic view on the upper level or in 2nd class. The trip takes 18 hours. The train makes a stop at Choum some 450 km from Nouadhibou. Sitting in the train you will enjoy exceptional sceneries (spectacles) and the desert in all its splendour.

From Choum, one can reach Atar and Adrar by bush-taxi.

ZOUERATE, is 755 km from Nouakchott, 600 km from Nouadhibou, and 300 km from Atar.

Zouerate, is the IRON CITY, it emerged from the desert in 1962, just at the foot of the iron ore mines of Tazadit. Life in Zouerate revolves around the mine. A labour intensive city, Zouerate is never the less marked by its Saharan environment. Zouerate is the main centre of the Area of Tiris Zemmour, a vast desert area.

Zouerate is also the starting point of a railroad which extends 600 km and which transports the ore to Nouadhibou. This ore is transported by the heaviest train of the world with its 250 wagons and probably the longest also at 2,5 km.

Recommended places to vist: the opencast mine and the city at work. Visit are to be arranged. There are also worthwhile sites in the desert all around Zouerate.
