ATAR is 300 km from Zouerate; 455 km from
Nouakchott; 90 km from Chenguetti and 200 km from Ouadane.
The town of Atar was founded during the 17th century. It was a city of commerce, practicing the Trans-Saharan trade. Capital of the Emirate of Adrar, the city attracted the
covetousness of the French colonists which regarded it as a strategic place to occupy the north of the country and to neutralize those resisting. (The Gouraud column).
Atar was an active city under colonization with a strong garrison. It is one of the first cities to be modernized. During these last years, Atar became the center of
tourism because the area of Adrar is the first tourist destination in the country.

A place to visit is the central market, a palm plantation like Tawaz, Teyarett, M’Haireth or Azougui, an old city of the Almoravides at 10 km where you will find significant remnants from the past. There is also the Amogjar Pass, at 11 km, Ain Ahel Taya.

TERGIT is 40 km of Atar;
It is a famous oasis, a small port of call in the middle of the desert where fresh water flows. The oasis has luxurious vegetation. It is one of the most beautiful sites of Adrar.
